These compostable cups (only for drinks below 110F) are made from NatureWorks polylactic acid (PLA), which is derived from corn grown in the USA. Though, they are indistinguishable from normal plastic and as light and strong, they fully degrade into water, carbon dioxide and organic material when composted. There is no reason not to use these compostable cups made from readily renewable resources as compared to the petroleum based plastic cups, which create toxicity and environmental pollution. Please note, composting is required for biodegradation. These compostable cups will biodegrade within 180 days in a commercial composting facility, but can take up to a year or more to biodegrade in a home composting system. World Centric is proud to offer three lines of hot cups, as well as lids. Each is lined with NatureWorks Ingeo™ (derived from plants grown in the USA) for a leak-proof barrier. Traditional hot cups are lined with polyethylene, which renders them difficult to recycle and unsuitable for composting. Technologically, it’s difficult to make something similar to paper cups from alternative fibers. We are currently researching to see if paper cups and bowls can be made from a mix of alternative fibers, recycled fibers, and responsibly managed wood/paper fibers to create a more sustainable product. In the meantime we carry lines that have improved on the standard paper cup. Our traditional white paper cup line is achieved using Elemental Chlorine Free (ECF) paper; paper bleached without using elemental chlorine. We are proud to offer this line in FSC® Certified paper as it helps reinforce our commitment to responsible forestry. The cups in our kraft paper cup line undergo no additional bleaching process and are the natural brown color of the paper itself. Our newer double walled cup line reduces the need for a paper cup sleeve. These double walled cups are also made with Elemental Chlorine Free (ECF) paper. World Centric bowls are made from wheatstraw, a leftover agricultural fiber and an annually renewable resource. Lids for Burrito Bowls are made from NatureWorks Ingeo™, a product derived from plants grown in the USA. Microwave and freezer safe, can be used for both hot and cold items Soak proof* No plastic or wax lining Suitable for hot foods up to 220 Fahrenheit Conform to FDA guidelines for food use Gluten-free. Wheatstraw is the remaining plant fiber after the grain (which stores the proteins and allergens) has been removed. *Though these compostable plates are soak proof, hot items will cause the plates to “perspire” and some condensation will form at the bottom. Lids for our plant fiber bowls may fit loosely when hot. Therefore, using the bowls with lids for take out is not recommended for hot liquid foods.

These paper biodegradable cups are lined with NatureWorks polylactic acid (PLA), which is derived from corn grown in the USA. They differ from normal cups in that normal cups are lined with polyethylene and are not compostable or recyclable. Paper/PLA cups are not the most sustainable solution, but they are a step in the right direction. The paper comes from PotLatch Corporation, a sustainable forestry corporation, and is Elemental Chlorine Free (ECF) (bleached without elemental chlorine). The cups are lined with PLA for easy recycling or composting.
